Following on from his sister Mourvèdre ‘Ivy Maureen’ in 2014, it was only fair that we dedicated the new single vineyard to the birth of our son Rhun.
This sure resembles his mighty character too.
The 2019 single vineyard Mataro differs from our existing vineyard sources in that the fruit comes from very old vines at 300m asl, which is fairly elevated by WA standards. The higher diurnal range and heavy red clay soils provide for a very intense wine, which requires taming in the winery.
This was achieved through fermenting whole berries with a comparatively short and cool extraction and maturation in barriques for 12 months. An ultra rare varietal expression of a unique site. Mischievous and cheeky, just like Rhun. Blackberry, tar and black truffles.
