‘Weip’ Country Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a speciality of ours, having been in near-continuous production since 1999. In 2020, the wine was produced from our ‘baby’ 30-year-old estate-grown and own-rooted bush vines. While less than 2km from where ‘Warrine’ was sourced, the wine is fundamentally different due to the very old granite derived soils and hardcore uncompromising organic farming. Identical winemaking to the ‘Warrine’ Chenin, however, kept on lees a little longer looking for some sulphide-y funk. This is quite prominent early but will integrate with time, or swirling in glass. Absolutely typical SVW chenin blanc, with some affinity to the Loire-chenin grown on schist.

Tasting notes

This limited edition wine has been crafted without additions and represents the most pure expression of 80 year old dry-grown Chenin Blanc from our Estate vineyard in Baskerville, Free run juice was settled at low temperature, before spontaneous indigenous fermentation in seasoned French oak barriques.

The bouquet displays fresh cut pear, Meyer lemon and damp straw, which will evolve to a honeyed compote with age. The textured palate is concentrated and deep, culmination in long mineral etched finish. This wine has been bottled without fining or filtration and a small edible sediment may naturally precipitate in bottle.
